Boys Basketball
Juanita is currently 2-7 in league and 6-11 overall, which puts them in 5th place in the 3A division. JHS boys basketball has been working hard to compete with some tough teams in the AAA league. Under the direction of Jeff Patrick they are turning up the defense to an intense level.

JHS boys are playing a physical, tenacious style defense that brings a lot of excitement to the fans. The team has been led by Ryon Cunnigan who is averaging 18 points a game which makes him the third leading scorer in the league. The team continues to improve every week and are looking to upset a team come playoff time.

There are ten seniors on this year's team: Daniel Babazanov, Jake Sodeman, Zac Brandon, Cole Graves, Ryon Cunnigan, Kris Otterholt, Blake Coffey, Paymon Parsadmehr, Alex Rider and Robby Ryan. A big thank you goes out to these seniors! – Submitted by Jeff Patrick

Girls Basketball
Your Juanita Varsity Girl’s squad has a record of 6 wins and 3 losses. They’re currently in third place having dropped two tough games last week, and are looking forward to winning the next three which could allow them to finish the season in second place in their tough KingCo 3A/2A division. They’re heading down the home-stretch of their season with only three League games remaining. Their last home regular season game is this Wednesday, February 3, at 6:30 p.m. vs. Mount Si. It's Senior Night, so come down and send off our four amazing Senior leaders in style.

Coach Sam Lee has all of his girls playing hard-nosed defense at a 100mph pace, going deep into his bench at every game. Their team has great balance with any one of seven or eight players capable of being the leading scorer in any game. This factor of their team has been invaluable with a Junior starting guard out with a severe ankle sprain. The rest of the team picked up the slack and played tough. After a week of physical therapy and healing time, the team is looking forward to being full strength again this week.

There is a lot of excitement about this team for now and into the future. They are competing at a very high level, having lost only one game their first swing through KingCo to Mercer Island who is ranked fourth in the state. With talented young players being developed in their feeder program, the Rebel Girls Basketball team looks to make runs into the post season for years to come.

Come be a part of something special and give our Seniors a great night at the Field House Wednesday February 3rd.– Submitted by Toni Paddock

Wrestling
The Rebels wrestling team ended the dual meet season Thursday with a win over Redmond. Recording wins were Danny Baba, Austin Chen, Matt Muna, Derek Kuo, and Logan McCallum. The young Rebels end the dual meet season with a record of 3-11. Now they prepare for the post season, which starts with the district meet February 6 at Liberty High School. The top three placers go to Regionals the following week. Cody Treddenbarger, Danny Baba, Derek Reubish, Logan McCallum, Michael Przystupa and Phuoc Nguyen all finish the season with winning records, and look to finish their season in the Tacoma Dome on February 19. We wish them all luck. –Submitted by Craig McCallum

Vocal Music News
December was a busy month for the Rebel Choirs. The Concert Choir performed their regular holiday concert early in the month, followed by December 4 “Woodinville Lights Festival” performances on both Molbaks Event Stage and in the Madrona Room at the Carol Edwards Center, where a choir parent of another high school responded, “Wow, I was impressed. . . and I’m not easily impressed!”

The Concert Choir was joined by the Jazz Choir and Concert Choirs from Kamiakin and Finn Hill Juniors as they brought holiday cheer to chilled onlookers at Bothell’s Country Village on December 5.

The Jazz Choir went on to perform five more times over the next two weeks for their second annual Lake Washington Technical College’s holiday staff party, the Rotary Club of Kirkland, the Inglewood Golf and Country Club’s Womens’ Golf League (where they received a standing ovation), the Finn Hill and Kamiakin Regional Concert, and our own Juanita High School staff breakfast to close out 2009. In honor of the Jazz Choir’s performance, The Rotary Club of Kirkland made a 300-pound produce donation to Rotary First Harvest.

The Concert Choir joined our Orchestra, Concert Band, and supplemental Symphonic Band members in a combined arrangement of “Dry Your Tears, Afrika,” from the movie Amistad, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. – Submitted by Lehua Pischke, JHS Choir Director

Band
Although the season is wrapping up, Rebel Pep Band continues supporting the girls and boys basketball teams at our home games.

February will begin with about 50 of Juanita’s musicians (from band, choir, and orchestra) involved in the Regional Solo and Ensemble Festival. Those with the highest ratings will be invited to participate in the WIAA State Solo and Ensemble Festival at Central Washington University in April. – Submitted by Mariko Lane

From the Seattle Times
Seattle Times Star of the Week

Tori Close, Juanita Girls basketball

In case you missed it, early in the season the Juanita Lady Rebels placed a player on the Seattle Times, “Star of the Week” awards list. Senior co-captain, Tori Close was named 3A Player of the Week for her all around top performance vs. Bishop Blanchet on November 29. Close, a 5-foot-10 senior, led the Rebels to a 57-52 victory their season opener, with 17 points, nine rebounds and four steals — all team highs. She made eight of 13 shots from the field.

Also for the first time in recent memory, the Juanita Lady Rebels Girls' Basketball Team is listed in the Top 3A teams in the State as a "team to watch."

Dear Parents of Rebels and Rebel Alumni:

As you no doubt know, the school board has approved a new sports participation fee for the 2009-2010 school year – a jump from $75 to $275 per sport. Unfortunately, many families may decide that the cost for their child to participate in a sport at JHS is prohibitive.

To help prevent this from happening, the Juanita Rebel Booster Club will be accepting sports-specific donations to offset sports participation fees for students whose families will be adversely affected by the increase. It will be up to each head coach to determine donation recipients.**

If you are interested in donating, please mail a check to:

Juanita Rebels Booster Club
13501 100th Ave NE, #5027
Kirkland, WA 98034

Please ensure that the sport you wish to designate and the words "Fee Donation" are written on the memo line. The Juanita Rebels Booster Club is a registered 501(c) 3 not-for-profit organization. Each donor will receive a receipt for tax purposes.
**We have received over $600 towards these expenses! Thank you

Qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch?

If you qualify for and participate in the LWSD free and reduced lunch program, 100% of your sports participation fee is waived. Applications are available in the athletic office. Bring your completed application to the bookkeeper. (There are no waivers for ASB cards, a $40 fee.)

The Athletic Department will start clearing athletes when the office reopens on August 17th. Please forward this to families who might be interested in donating, or who may qualify for a waiver.

Thanks for your support,
JRBC Executive Committee

JHS Launches Recycling/Composting Program
Are you passionate about saving the environment? JHS has begun efforts to establish a recycling/composting program and needs your help. The school switched from Styrofoam to reusable red plastic baskets to save money (and the environment), but the baskets are being thrown out. Time is needed during lunch and at sporting events in the field house to help students/parents learn how to use the bins correctly. If you can help, please contact Jed Reynolds, Resource Conservation Manager at jreynolds@lwsd.org. – Submitted by Jan Shinstrom

Snyder to walk in Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure event
I did it - I registered for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure! A walk of 60 miles in three days.
Scary, yet exciting. As a survivor, I want to do as much as I can to make sure others have the quality treatment that I was lucky enough to receive, and to find a cure for breast cancer. Any donations would be greatly appreciated. Every single dollar adds up! http://www.the3day.org/goto/cheer4acure <http://www.the3day.org/goto/cheer4acure>.
