Cody Treddenbarger is a State Champion!
Congratulations to Cody who pinned his way through the post season and was also the champion in the KingCo 3A District and 3A Region 1. Cody is the Rebels' first wrestling state champion since 2000. He was absolutely dominant, pinning all of his Mat Classic opponents in the first period, including a 46 second pin in the finals. He was also named a WIAA/Seattle Times State “Athlete of the Week” for February 7-13 in Class 3A.
Joining Cody at the state meet were sophomore Danny Baba and juniors Michael Przystupa and Logan McCallum. Michael was the other Rebel to win a match at the Mat Classic. The young team finished the season in 5th place in KingCo, seventh in the region, and 20th in the state. We return all but one wrestler next year, six of them being returning regional qualifiers. – Submitted by Craig McCallum
Girls Basketball – So Much to Celebrate
Hey Rebel Faithful - Your Juanita Lady Rebels Basketball team is going where few have gone before!
Season Retrospective – With a strong showing finishing third in KingCo 3A/2A League play and some quality victories vs. non-league 4A opponents, Juanita Lady Rebs finished 12-8 overall. Last season ended with a loss in the KingCo tournament play-in game, but this season Juanita made some big noise. Juanita defeated Sammamish in the play in game, and then ended up fourth in KingCo after two close losses to Bellevue and Mt Si.
As the low seed, Juanita had to face a tough Franklin squad in a loser out game in their first Sea-King District tournament game. Juanita shocked Franklin in front of a hostile crowd in their own gym. Coach Sam had his girls full court pressing from wire to wire. The pressure got to Franklin and they committed multiple turnovers which led to easy baskets. Kim Baba drove the lane repeatedly scoring 21 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and Kate Cryderman dominated scoring 18 points and 14 rebounds inside. Franklin made a run near the end and lead by 3 with less than a minute to go, but Kim took over again off of steals by teammates and Juanita took a landmark win for their program.
Next up Juanita was thrown into the lion’s den at Bellevue College vs. the #1 ranked 3A team in the state, Holy Names. The Catholic school, drawing from all over the Seattle area, has accumulated four Division 1 recruits on their squad and has dominated the Metro 3A ranks all season winning their league games by an average margin of 25 points. On Thursday night Juanita took the court and represented Rebel Nation well.
Juanita held the lead most of the first quarter, matching the athleticism and muscle of Holy Names. The Rebel girls pressed and harassed them into an uncharacteristic 22 turnovers. They were up by 1 at the end of the first quarter and down by 2 at the half. On a run of bad luck in the third they were down by 12 and things looked grim, but their press picked up intensity and they stormed back to within 4 points with less than a minute to play. They played their hearts out, but ended with a 6 point loss. Molly Grager blocked 11 shots from their D1 bound star forwards and had 8 points. Kim Baba finished with 14 points, Mandy Wilson 7, and Taylor Paddock & Kate Cryderman 6 each. Your Lady Rebels may have lost, but the gym was lit up with respect for your program. Juanita Girls Basketball is on the Map!
But the 2009-2010 season is not quite over for Coach Sam Lee and his Lady Rebel Basketball Team. The Lady Rebs meet Bellevue in a loser out game Tuesday night. If our Rebs play the way they did vs. Holy Names, they will move on to a Winner to State game on Thursday.
Be there at Bellevue High Tuesday night, March 2, at 5:30 p.m. for the tip-off of the next big step of the LEGEND that is Lady Rebs Basketball. A great team needs their great fans to succeed. See you in the gym! – Submitted by Toni Paddock

Boys Swim & Dive Championship Meet Highlights

Participating in Districts swim were: Robert Boyer, Alex Helsel, Jake Helsel, Max Johnson, Philip Kim, Nick Natale, Colby Rambert, Mark Stevens and Ryan Walter. Despite tough competition, each participant either improved or equaled their personal best time of the season.
Earning Honorable Mention All KingCo (Crown) were Philip Kim and Max Johnson. Philip and Alex were 2010 SeaKing District Scholar Athletes.
There were four JHS swimmers in the 200 Free Relay who headed to State in a Wildcard spot for 3A, seeded 23rd: Mark Stevens, Robert Boyer, Philip Kim and Jake Helsel (Alternates: Colby Rambert, Max Johnson, Nick Natale, and Ryan Walter). Congratulations on a great season.
Divers allocated into State based on 3A District finals placement were first time divers, Ralph Paulozzo and Pawel Czyz. Pawel was the only one from JHS to make top 16 at prelims and finished 16th at finals. Ralph made 17th in diving. The boys did a great job, moving up to 21st place in the 3A State, wow! (They were originally 26th.) – Submitted by Tami Johnson
Girls Tennis Season Preview
This coming season the JHS girls’ tennis team is ready to compete, have fun and improve! Last year we lost many seniors from both our varsity and JV squads, but we are looking forward to receiving a big group of tenth graders and creating a team that can rival anyone in KingCo. Also, our JV should be very good this year, as we will have a very deep team. We are looking forward to a successful season, but most importantly to an entertaining one.
In addition, the girls’ tennis team will be having many events to fundraise money for the team. Some of the events from last year included car washes, helping run basketball tournaments, and hosting a fundraiser tennis tournament. This season we are going to continue to raise money to help pay for athletic fees, summer camp scholarships, and someday getting lights at the JHS tennis courts! And of course there will be plenty of pasta feeds, bowling nights and other great social events.
Looking forward to a great season - From Coach Ochsner, Coach Paredes, and the entire Rebel Tennis Family. |

Performing Arts
Band
The JHS Symphonic Band is preparing for the Central Washington University Wind Ensemble Festival on Friday, March 5. This is one of our most important performances of the year – we’ll travel to Central and play for nationally recognized college band directors and some of the best high school bands in the state. We’ll also get to listen to many of those fine groups, as well as the outstanding Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band I from CWU. In addition to their hard work at school and practicing at home, students attended an evening rehearsal and some sections have worked together on their own time outside of class (including the flutes at 6:30 a.m. on a Monday!)
All three groups are working on music for our Spring Concert, which will be Wednesday, March 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the gym. Come and hear some fantastic music!
Juanita is hosting the Northlake Band I and II Contest on Thursday, March 25. Every concert band from the Lake Washington and Northshore School Districts will be performing for each other and will also receive critiques and a clinic from a great panel of judges. We do need some parent help for this, so if you’re interested, let Mrs. Lane know! – Submitted by Mariko Lane

Dear Parents of Rebels and Rebel Alumni:
As you no doubt know, the school board has approved a new sports participation fee for the 2009-2010 school year – a jump from $75 to $275 per sport. Unfortunately, many families may decide that the cost for their child to participate in a sport at JHS is prohibitive.
To help prevent this from happening, the Juanita Rebel Booster Club will be accepting sports-specific donations to offset sports participation fees for students whose families will be adversely affected by the increase. It will be up to each head coach to determine donation recipients.**
If you are interested in donating, please mail a check to:
Juanita Rebels Booster Club
13501 100th Ave NE, #5027
Kirkland, WA 98034
Please ensure that the sport you wish to designate and the words "Fee Donation" are written on the memo line. The Juanita Rebels Booster Club is a registered 501(c) 3 not-for-profit organization. Each donor will receive a receipt for tax purposes.
**We have received over $600 towards these expenses! Thank you
Qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch?
If you qualify for and participate in the LWSD free and reduced lunch program, 100% of your sports participation fee is waived. Applications are available in the athletic office. Bring your completed application to the bookkeeper. (There are no waivers for ASB cards, a $40 fee.)
The Athletic Department will start clearing athletes when the office reopens on August 17th. Please forward this to families who might be interested in donating, or who may qualify for a waiver.
Thanks for your support,
